What’s On My Mind by Lark

The State of the Market

Bitcoin is still largely following the risk attitude of broader markets. It along with most assets took a hit on the FED’s announcement today. More on that in a moment.

$28,000 is proving to be a very important area for Bitcoin. As you can see here it was a major area of price support in 2021 and 2022.

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

This area also is a zone in which about 600,000 Bitcoin have changed hands. Making it a sticky price zone as we could see sellers here who want to get out at break even if they think things are going to get worse.

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

The S&P 500 continues to hold up rather well, although it is struggling to stay above the 50 day moving average. With so much chaos in the markets and economy it is actually doing better than a lot may have expected. But with recession fears and a banking crisis brewing we could still see volatility here which could reduce a risk on attitude by market participants.

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

I suppose the big question is “will the FED’s money printing override all other fears and pump markets anyway?”.

Over in Ethereum land something pretty amazing has been happening. Ethereum has been deflationary since January 16th. This means that we have seen an almost 70,000 Ethereum reduction in supply. Good stats for a bear market. And at a fundamental level a very bullish long term catalyst. Now all eyes will be on the Ethereum Shanghai upgrade in about 3 weeks.

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

What The FED Said

The goal of the FED in its aggressive interest rate hikes over the last year have basically been to break something. And, they finally succeeded. Although I think they had thought it would be the labor markets, in fact they broke the banking system. 2 US banks collapsed and dozens more are on the verge of collapse. Systemically important bank Credit Suisse also collapsed. It was quickly bailed out by Switzerland and taken over by UBS. The impact is global.

A few massively consequential things have happened in the last few weeks.

  1. Bank Term Funding Program announced that it will allow struggling banks to access liquidity against their US treasury bonds and mortgage backed securities. This also works to ensure that depositors at banks in the USA will be covered beyond what the FDIC can cover. The only way to do this is via money printing. Remember, the FDIC thinks that US banks are missing about 620 billion of customer money sitting in unrealized losses due to the market volatility surrounding bonds and mortgage backed securities. That is a big hole to fill.
  2. FED balance sheet expands by 300 billion in just a few days. This erased about half of the tightening that has taken place over the last year.
  3. Inflation falls again from 6.4% to 6%. Things are continuing to trend in the right direction here putting even more pressure on the FED.
  4. Swap Lines, this is even crazier than the Bank Term Funding Program. Swap Lines basically means the FED is taking QE global. The program will allow foreign central banks like the ECB, Bank of England, and Bank of Japan to bail out banks locally who have over exposure and big unrealized losses on US treasury notes and mortgage backed securities to get liquidity without dumping them on the market. This is a backdoor bailout program for banks around the world.

That all brings us to today.

FED chief Jerome Powell announced another 0.25% increase to the FED fund rate. Moving rates up to a range of 4.75 to 5%.

This was basically in line with what the market was expecting. Although there had been hopes of a pause in rate hikes or even a cut in rates due to the banking crisis. But the FED stayed the course.

A few noteworthy comments from his announcement:

  1. The FED is ready to use whatever tools necessary to protect depositors at banks.
  2. If the FED needs to raise rates higher than they had anticipated then they will.
  3. Although the FED had considered a pause in rate hikes they see the problem of high inflation and an overly strong jobs market as problems that need to be solved by the FED. Seems Jerome won’t be happy until more people lose their jobs.
  4. The inflation fight still has a long way to go.

Markets took a tumble on the news from the FED, but the 0.25% raise did fall in line with broader expectations. So perhaps that will equate into a continuation of what we have been seeing in markets after everyone brushes off the disappointment of the FED not pausing or cutting.

Power Of Dollar Cost Averaging

A recent report by Messari highlighted the simple power of consistently investing and thinking long term. It shows that had you started buying Bitcoin at the very peak top of $69,000 in 2021 and simply bought some BTC every week from then to right now you would be 10% in profit!

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

And while a 10% gain may not sound like a crazy amount, it is still putting you on the winning side of investing. And it shows that even if you buy the peaks, you can still win if you stay the course and think long term and remain consistent in your investing actions. Pretty cool!

Arbitrum Airdrop

Arbitrum Airdrop is here, finally! I really hope that you got this one! We made so many calls to action for it. Including our most recent on February 2nd, 4 days before the snapshot. But over the last 12 months we have provided multiple guides and reminders here and on Youtube. If you missed out then you just didn’t do the work.

Find out if you are eligible here  https://arbitrum.foundation/. You either are or you are not. This link is safe. Don’t click any links you see on social media. Don’t believe anyone promising you anything. Scammers feast on events like this, don’t become a victim.

Before we talk about what might happen, there are a few things to remember. Arbitrum is currently the most used layer two product. Over time will Bybit’s Mantle, Coinbase’s BASE, Optimism, or Polygon’s zkEVM erode this market dominance? Maybe. But right now Arbitrum is very far ahead with 24 million transactions in the last 30 days compared to Optimism’s 7 million! The reason for Arbitrum dominance is both a massive flood of projects from other chains integrating with Arbitrum and a massive native ecosystem that popped up with projects like Radiant Capital and GMX both being massively popular money makers.

So, I am getting some ARB as an airdrop. It is worth a decent amount of money. But then what? Shall I sell or hold? Shall I even buy more?

Well how did the Optimism airdrop play out? Well, as you can see after the initial hype saw the price get to $1.50 it then dropped to $0.50! A whopping 66% decline.

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

The price stayed down for a month. However this was at the same time that Celsius and Three Arrows Capital collapsed and the entire market was suppressed. Market conditions are quite different now. But, many airdrops go through something similar. Essentially there is huge hype in the first few days. Loads of people dump their coins thus suppressing price. Then we may expect a new price rally as sellers get exhausted and whales have moved coins into their pockets and are ready to pump the coin up.

It is worth noting that Optimism was nowhere near as hyped as ARB. And the market vibe was a lot different then. Markets are feeling kind of bullish and ARB is a bag that a lot of people want to get. Still though, over 600,000 addresses were eligible for the ARB airdrop. Of the total 10 billion coins 11% is going to the airdrop. Plus about 1% to platforms like GMX and Radiant, which those teams can add to their treasuries or dump. This will be the initial supply as the rest will be locked up on vesting schedules for early investors.

So what would a fair value be for ARB? Well, let’s look at Optimism, which like Arbitrum has a low circulating supply and high fully diluted value. At 4X the daily transactions on Arbitrum as compared to Optimism then we can do some napkin math which would give ARB a market cap of 3.2 billion and about $3-3.50 per coin. Or maybe total locked in DeFi is a more interesting metric? Arbitrum has twice the value of Optmism, so maybe then a 1.6 billion valuation or about $1.50 per coin.

I would probably sell my ARB bag if it is over $3. I would be interested to buy more around $1, ideally under. I probably won’t buy anything in the first week. I want to wait and see how it plays out.

PS, it is a useless governance token. Yes, it can pump, but I will be keeping this fact in mind. Holding ARB does not earn you fees, there is no burn mechanism, nothing. Just governance, and even if I was super passionate about governing the platform, and I am not, then my vote would be borderline irrelevant anyway. The way money is made on this coin is by buying and flipping it higher.

There may also be incentives to earn ARB much like OP was able to be earned by using protocols on the chain. I will keep you updated if we get an announcement like that. But, much like on Optimism, this could be a lucrative program for DeFi farmers and degens.

I also think that the entire Arbitrum ecosystem could continue to be popular. This would then bode well for Arbitrum natives like GMX and RDNT, as well as transplants from other chains like JOE and GNS.

Please keep in mind that new coin launches tend to be volatile and that you can lose a lot of money very quickly if trying to trade this event. You have been warned.

Market Analysis by Rekt Capital

In today’s newsletter, I will cover 6 Altcoins, specifically:

  • Chainlink (LINK)
  • Litecoin (LTC)
  • Ethereum (ETH)
  • Dusk Network (DUSK)
  • Fetch ai (FET)
  • Fantom (FTM)

Let’s dive in.

As a preface, here is the LINK analysis from earlier this month:

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

And here is today’s update:

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

Chainlink has done it again.

Successfully retested the black Range Low as support and has rallied +21% to the Range High resistance.

LINK has perfectly followed the blue path, as it has on many occasions within this range since May 2022.

One of the most reliable plays in the space for me personally.

Typically, at this Range High this is where LINK tends to overextend beyond the resistance, but if it can’t Monthly Close above the Range High then further range-bound behaviour could yet again lie ahead.

Monthly Close above the Range High however and LINK would challenge the red diagonal resistance and challenge for a new macro uptrend.

Litecoin — LTC/USD

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

Litecoin has successfully retested the Bull Flag top as support; the same Bull Flag that generated the breakout rally a couple of months ago.

A successful retest here should be able to lift LTC beyond the two red resistance above.

Of course, it’s important to not lose sight of the upcoming August Litecoin Halving and how this may still affect price:

History suggests LTC could still follow the green path towards the orange Macro Downtrend, all still prior to the Halving event before eventually performing a local top pre-halving, before experiencing a deep retracement heading into the later stages of 2023.

Following the deep retrace, LTC would probably develop a sideways range post-Halving (black), while possibly tagging the orange Higher Low trendline.

Historically, LTC has dipped to the orange Higher Low in the past but these have been periods of extreme downside volatility.

So naturally, a revisit of the orange Higher Low would be the worst-case scenario for LTC holders and best case scenario for prospective LTC investors.

But that being said, such a scenario would be an extreme one.

What’s more probably is a post-Halving retracement before forming a black-black consolidation range. But at this time it’s simply difficult to ascertain how wide this range will be and where the base of that range could form.

Of course, how could argue that the post-retracement, post-halving range could develop above the purple dashed Higher Low instead:

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

In which case we’d see price action coil in towards the apex of the triangle formed by the orange Macro Downtrend and the purple dashed Higher Low.

Where the range ultimately forms will depend on where LTC registers its local top on this upcoming Pre-Halving rally.

For the time being, we know that LTC will experience:

  • A Pre-Halving rally
  • A Pre-Halving local top
  • A Post-Halving retracement
  • A Post-Halving Accumulation Range before the next Post-Halving macro uptrend

How all these technical pieces fit in exactly will clarify over time and it starts with where LTC tops on this upcoming Pre-Halving rally.

ChatGPT-4: How to Benefit as a Worker and Trader/Investor by Erik

ChatGPT is beyond hype. Already 100+ million users are melting the server parks of this chatbot on steroids. Besides excitement, existential questions creep in. Every online business is wondering how this will change their competitiveness and workflow. Similar questions are posed by freelance knowledge workers and retail investors: how will this bot, which effectively ‘scales expertise’ affect our future workflow – and our investment and trading decisions? Let’s dive in.

The new iteration of ChatGPT, GPT-4, came out only roughly three months after the previous one. As the incredibly sophisticated chat bot launched on March 14 of 2023, it became available to users who opted for a paid account. Developers who wanted to have access to the API were placed on a waiting list.

The popularity of this new version became apparent quickly, as the maximum number of queries that were allowed dropped from 100 per 4 hours on launch to 25 per 3 hours a few days later. It should still be plenty for everyday use.

Some Impressive Feats Already Achieved by ChatGPT-4

Twitter went crazy tinkering with ChatGPT-4 after OpenAI, the company behind it, already showed some of its eccentric capabilities. Here’s a random list of some interesting achievements of our new bot friend (Just search for #GPT4 to find more):

Improvements Compared to 3.5

Like the previous version, ChatGPT-4 is surprisingly good at text summarization and writing and debugging code. It seems to have gotten better at logical reasoning, which is shown by the below prompt.

Arbitrum Airdrop, What the FED Said, ChatGPT-4, & The Latest News - - 2024

The same question of everyday mechanics posed to the previous and current version of ChatGPT

Image Understanding in Closed Beta

Another new feature, image understanding, is in ‘closed beta’ and will become available to more users sometime in the future. As of now, only a subset of users can input not just text but also images. It will answer users’ questions about an image.

ChatGPT as a ‘Deflationary Nuclear Bomb’

AI tools like ChatGPT4, when viewed through a lens of a macro-economic analyst such as Raoul Pal, are set to cause a ‘deflationary shock’ to our economies.

Deflationary effect of ChatGPT-4

Why is AI ‘deflationary’? Take ChatGPT as an example. It ‘scales expertise’: it makes expertise more widely available and at much lower cost.

Take a step back to the world of goods and factories. When China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, this event would ‘scale manufacturing’, as it unlocked hundreds of millions of new workers to the world. This decreased average manufacturing prices and suppressed them for decades – only now do we potentially see the end of that era.

What’s the parallel with AI? Well, ChatGPT, for example, is a smart assistent that increases our productivity when it comes to producing ideas, and structuring information. And that matters. Because admit it: which percentage of your time are you busy producing content and/or handle data for your work? Quite a lot, if you’re anything like Lark or his team of writers…

Microsoft is integrating ChatGPT architecture in its toolkit. It isn’t hard to imagine how this will make office workers more productive. It will draft emails for them, summarize email threads, make automatic notes of meetings, help them with data analysis in Excel, etcetera. Work will take less time.

Why This Deflationary Effect Matters for Investors

So, if this deflationary effect will indeed play out, why care? Well, the central banks of this world need inflation. The entire financial system needs some inflation to keep from imploding. A deflationary collapse is a threat just as feared as hyperinflation on the other end of the spectrum. Ergo: the money printer will have to go brrr again.

Still, it remains of course to be seen to which extent we will become more productive. After all, the amount of free expertise on platforms like Twitter is already staggering. Excellent free guides on topics from copywriting to gardening to investing are already widespread. Has this made us more productive, do we effectively make use of all of these? Not really.

Can You Use ChatGPT for Trading Advice?

ChatGPT-4 has a knowledge cutoff date of September 2021. So, for example, it doesn’t know yet that Ethereum turned to proof-of-stake. It doesn’t know what happened to FTX, nor can it tell you what Balaji’s thesis on The Network State is. So, it’s in its current form not usable for knowledge or trades on short to medium time frames

But that doesn’t mean it can’t be used to generate some knowledge about trading.

When you prompt it with (example taken from Tascha Che):

“Recommend 3 profitable trading strategy setups for trend following and momentum trading, with an average holding period of 30 days.”…

…It spits out a decent short article that indeed covers three prominent and standard strategies (I summarized it here):

  • Moving Average Crossover Strategy: The moving average crossover strategy is a simple yet effective way to identify trends and capture potential profits in trending markets. In this strategy, use two different moving averages, such as the 50-day and 200-day moving averages. (And it follows with detailing the trading setup)
  • Relative Strength Index (RSI) Divergence Strategy: The RSI Divergence strategy identifies potential trend reversals based on the divergence between the asset’s price and the RSI indicator. Setup: Calculate the 14-day RSI for the asset. Identify bullish divergences: When the asset’s price forms lower lows while the RSI forms higher lows, it indicates a potential bullish reversal. Identify bearish divergences: When the asset’s price forms higher highs while the RSI forms lower highs, it suggests a potential bearish reversal.
  • Breakout Trading Strategy: The breakout trading strategy aims to capture significant price moves following a consolidation period, which often leads to strong trends.

This is knowledge that you can find on many websites, such as Investopedia. That’s not to say it’s not impressive – especially since ChatGPT-4 packages its reply as a nice article and you don’t have to click around five times until you find the article that answers your question.

Note though that its mention of the 50-day and 200-day moving average in the first strategy is a bit off: we asked specifically for average holding duration of 30 days. These moving averages are a bit too slow for that purpose.

ChatGPT can create Pine Script to backtest trading strategies

Pine Script is a programming language created by TradingView to backtest trading strategies. Check out how this trader prompted ChatGPT to create a Pine Script backtest that buys and sells BTC based on Open Interest data pulled from TradingView. Just… wow.

How to Not Have ChatGPT Disrupt Your Job but Benefit

It can feel overwhelming to have to face this breakthrough technology burst on the scene. What will happen to jobs like…. well, let’s ask ChatGPT!

Jobs that GPT-4 can replace

We will all have to go back to working in the fields…

The main surprise is that ChatGPT didn’t put coder/developer on the list, as GPT-4 is so good at coding.

ChatGPT replacing jobs

Counterargument Against the Doom

Let’s take a step back. AI has been better than humans for decades in some specific domains. Software that interprets MRI scans, chess computers, obviously spelling and grammar checkers… still, AI hasn’t replace humans in those fields. Instead, humans use AI to help them improve their own output.

Writing ChatGPT Prompts as a New Profession

So if you view ChatGPT as a smart assistent, your job will become write prompts that are maximally effective. There’s already an emerging little industry of ChatGPT prompt writers! And no doubt, consultants who advice companies how to integrate

Some of the emerging consensus of ChatGPT prompt writers:

  • Start with a simple prompt and increase the level of complexity. This will get you better results than giving it a complex task right out the gate. In that case, the results will lack precision and nuance.
  • Structure its task: give it a checklist of steps and that divides up its task.
  • Talk to the bot like to a human: you can ask if it understands something, and you can ask it to elaborate.
ChatGPT-4: How to Benefit as a Worker and Trader/Investor

How to invest in AI?

The ‘Jedi mind trick’ is to realise that if you can’t beat the machines, join them. As mentioned, start cooperating with them in your work. But also: invest in them. Invest in AI.

This is a bit tricky though. Unlike like investing in Web3, there are no coins you can buy. The AI startup companies are only investable for VC capital and high net worth individuals.

There are still some ways though. You can invest in companies that invest in AI.

  • Big tech companies come to mind: Google, Microsoft, Tesla, Apple, Amazon. In general, try to keep an eye on the market: which companies are fastest and smartest in the way they integrate AI?
  • ETFs that focus on this industry, such as Artificial Intelligence ETF’s.
  • The ‘picks and shovels‘ of this industry, the semiconductor industry. Pick promising semiconductor stocks and/or ETF’s that focus on the semiconductor industry.
