Joe Rogan and Sam Altman Talk Up Bitcoin
This past Friday, Joe Rogan had Sam Altman on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. The topic of crypto came up, and both had good things to say about bitcoin.
Let’s start with Sam Altman’s comments.
First, when you listen to the conversation in context, it’s clear that Altman was framing the bulk of his opinions towards Worldcoin, the iris-scan-for-crypto project that he co-founded in 2019. Altman’s bitcoin compliment was really only an aside.
“I’m excited about [Worldcoin]. I’m excited about bitcoin too, but I think this idea that we have a global currency that is outside the control of any government is a super logical and important step on the tech tree”, said Altman.
Rogan didn’t seem interested in discussing Worldcoin. But he did have some optimistic opinions on bitcoin. Specifically, Rogan stated:
The real fascinating crypto is bitcoin, to me. That’s the one that I think has the most likely possibility of becoming a universal viable currency. It’s limited in the amount that there can be, people mine it with their own computers, that to me is very fascinating. And I love the fact that it’s been implemented.
Rogan’s bitcoin comments are a big deal, because he’s arguably the most influential person on Earth. The Joe Rogan Experience is the world’s most listened to podcast, with an estimated 11 million people tuning in for each episode.
To put that in perspective, Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN get 1.5 million, 1.1 million, and 500 thousand primetime viewers each evening, respectively. That means Rogan’s episode listenership is 3.5X larger than all three U.S. cable news outlets combined.
Historically, Rogan has expressed a general curiosity towards bitcoin, has hosted some bitcoiners on the program (Andreas Antonopoulos and Jack Dorsey), and has even stated that he owns a “little bit”. However, his attitude towards bitcoin has always seemed to be something like an…
