Axie Infinity is the world’s most successful NFT-based online video game to date. Similar to Pokemon, it is a digital pet universe where players battle, raise, and trade fantasy creatures called Axies. One of the most compelling stories to come out of the Axie community is what’s known as play-to-earn, which is just what it sounds like--you can earn a token-based income for playing the game. This has resulted in a surge of play-to-earn guilds such as Yield Guild, Ready Player DAO, and humanDAO offering scholarships to rent Axie gaming assets and earn a a full time income playing the game for a substantially higher wage in emerging economies across the globe.

Although Axie uses Ethereum-based cryptocurrencies AXS as an earning token and SLP as an in-game reward token, the Axie game recently migrated to its own side-chain of Ethereum called Ronin Chain, built by Sky Mavis, the company behind Axie Infinity. This is where Axie gaming activities and transactions take place now. Players will no longer lose value for doing things like logging breeding activity on-chain. While not fully launched, Ronin has no transaction fees, which has lowered the barrier for many players to enter Axie, increasing its growing popularity, boosting it to the third most protocol revenue among all L1 blockchains, L2s, and dApps.
