The 9 Biggest Metaverse Projects

Everyone wants to know what the biggest metaverse projects in crypto are. While it feels like a lot of crypto projects are at a standstill, and DeFi is in its cave, hibernating. Many metaverse projects are still focused on building the future of Web3. Most people assume that anything “metaverse” must be a video game. But that’s not the case for a couple of projects on this list. That’s because metaverse is simply the best term the crypto industry has come up with to describe anything that creates new and revolutionary social networks. Projects that support the growth of these new networks are included for one reason. Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche, Polkadot, and other big networks can’t render or store games “yet.” You can’t upload Unreal Engine 5 on Ethereum and go to work. For this reason, you need dedicated networks to build the metaverse. This is why some projects that fall into the metaverse title might surprise you. When reviewing the biggest metaverse projects, don’t expect to find any of that Facebook Meta garbage either.

Not the Meta

1. Internet Computer (ICP)

If you’ve already read our “Why is ICP token Failing” article last June, you’re probably scratching your head. That’s because Internet Computer is technically the largest project with a metaverse label slapped on it. It’s not doing much to push the metaverse bar forward. This is widely due to the lack of decentralization around Internet Computer. You see, Internet Computer is not open source and doesn’t offer any benefits to developers that might want to build products using ICP. But, because ICP has continued raising more money every year. It’s managed to stay ahead with marketing campaign after marketing campaign. If ICP were to invest in building a usable product, that could change quickly.

Internet Computer is just like it sounds, looking to replace traditional internet service providers with decentralized internet services. The biggest problem for ICP is whose behind the project. Operated by The DFINITY Foundation,  Internet Computer runs a permission-only service that makes it very difficult for new projects to integrate. Any growth or value a project may have using Internet Computer is immediately commandeered by DFINITY. For this and many, many more reasons. It’s not suggested that anyone waste their time on Internet Computer.

2. Axie Infinity – (AXS)

Good ol’ Axie Infinity made more millionaires in 2021 than any other crypto project. Covered in late 2020 when the AXS token was first released, I couldn’t say enough great things about the rising star, including a how-to-play guide for good measure. This Pokemon-inspired NFT game took the metaverse world by storm as more users signed up to play and earn than any project to date. Capturing the hearts and minds of casual and hardcore gamers, the Axie Infinity party felt like it would never end. Then 2022 happened, and AXS found itself back below $10.

This is not only because breeding…
